Madrid - Cuban intelligence services wield an important influence in
Venezuela, where Cuban secret agents have direct access to President
Hugo Chavez, leaked documents
published by El Pais showed Wednesday.

The Spanish daily was one among five newspapers to gain advance access
to more than 250,000 secret US diplomatic documents released by the
whistleblower website WikiLeaks at the weekend.

Cuban intelligence agents give Chavez information that they do not even
share with their Venezuelan counterparts, El Pais quoted the documents
as saying.

The documents reveal Washington's concern over the security of its
embassy in Caracas, which was spied on by a Venezuelan team under Cuban
control.

Cuba's influence on Venezuelan intelligence 'could directly affect US
interests,' a US diplomat wrote.

Cuba may even have influenced Chavez' decisions to sack some of his
collaborators and to appoint others, according to El Pais.
