Coast Guard repatriates 38 Cuban migrants
The Associated Press
MIAMI -- The U.S. Coast Guard has repatriated 38 Cuban migrants who were
stopped south of the Florida Keys trying to make it to U.S. shores.
Coast Guard officials said Thursday the first group of 20 Cubans were
spotted in a boat south of Marathon on June 7. The second boatload of 18
Cubans was spotted by a Customs and Border Protection aircraft the same
day southwest of Key West.
Both groups of Cubans were taken aboard Coast Guard cutters. The cutter
Ocracoke took them to Cuba on Wednesday.
Under the U.S. "wet foot, dry foot" policy, most Cubans who make it to
American shores are permitted to stay, while most of those caught at sea
are returned home.
