The prominent Cuban dissident Guillermo Farinas has given his reaction
to the release of 52 political prisoners by authorities there. He gave
an exclusive interviewspoke ex to euronews from a hospital in Santa
Clara where he is recovering after ending a hunger strike that lasted
134 days. He called off his protest when the Cuban government struck a
prisoner release deal with the Catholic church. Some of those freed have
flown into exile in Spain.
He told euronews: "The brothers Fidel and Raul Castro are going to stop
the changes right here, with the release of these 52 political prisoners
of conscience. And we don't want that. We must try to broaden the
reforms and that depends on us, the peaceful opposition. It depends on
the Cuban people but also on the international media, governments,
parliaments, political organisations all over the world. It depends on
the democratic left that has strongly criticised what is happening in
Cuba. It also depends on those in exile and the Cuban diaspora all over
the world.
He added: "I believe the Catholic Church is the ideal vehicle, on a
national basis, for such exchanges. I believe the Catholic Church must
get rid of a range of inhibitions it has, and realise that we are living
a crucial moment in the history of Cuba. They now must seize this role
that history and God gave to them, and mediate between the political
rivals in Cuba."
