Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Steven Vanackere welcomes the
announcement that 52 Cuban political prisoners are to be freed. As High
Representative Catherine Ashton said earlier on behalf of the EU, we are
now low awaiting the swift liberation of all 52 prisoners.

Steven Vanackere spoke on the phone with his Spanish counterpart Miguel
Ángel Moratinos, who is currently in Cuba, and thanked him for his
efforts to facilitate the dialogue between the Cuban government and the
island's Catholic Church.

Minister Vanackere hoped that this would mark a step towards lasting
improvement in the relationship between the EU and Cuba. After all, this
latest development is in line with the objectives pursued by the EU,
especially in the domains of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
