TORONTO -- A 19-year-old southern Ontario man is back in Canada after
being stranded in Cuba for three months following a car accident.
Although friends and family were waiting, airport security quickly
ushered Cody LeCompte away upon arrival at Toronto's Pearson airport
Friday night. Cody knelt down and kissed a parking lot at the airport,
fulfilling his promise to the kiss Canadian ground when arrived home.
LeCompte's struggle with Cuban law began when the rental car he was
driving was sideswiped by a pickup truck and some of his passengers were
injured. LeCompte was told he could not leave the country because
accidents resulting in death or injury are treated as crimes under Cuban
law.
Last week, Cuban police agreed to let the family post bail, on the
condition LeCompte would return for a trial.
Gary Parmenter, Cody's uncle who has been with him Cuba, was angered by
the decision to take them out a side door without telling family,
friends, and the media.
Cody said he is heading to Harvey's, where he will have "real beef" for
the first time in three months.
