Historic Cuban leader Fidel Castro, 85, once world-famous for his
extremely long speeches, has found a new format for his comments on
current affairs - brief messages, sometimes a single sentence.
Cuba's opposition bloggers, most notably the award-winning Yoani
Sanchez, have in recent years very actively used Twitter to post their
views.
Castro is now using the Cubadebate pro-government website to post his
messages - which also appear on Twitter in @reflexionfidel - and has
issued five since Sunday, none of them longer than six lines. Most of
them are fairly cryptic but others appeared to hold advice for the
government even though Castro gave up power almost six years ago.
In recent years, Castro had been expressing himself in long articles
published in Cuban state media, dealing with very diverse topics from
the environment to nuclear proliferation and often citing news reports.
The messages' new, brief format prompted some speculation regarding the
elderly revolutionary's health. Castro was last seen in public in late
March, during the visit to Cuba of Pope Benedict XVI.
