A Winnipeg family is mourning the loss of a couple killed in an
ambulance crash while vacationing on the island of Cayo Coco, Cuba.
Relatives have identified the victims as János Boda, 50, and Rózsa Boda,
51. The two were celebrating János 50th birthday.
"My daddy, he was always able to make me laugh when I was going through
a hard time," Bettina Boda, the couple's 16-year-old daughter, told CTV
Winnipeg.
The family said Rózsa began having chest pain early Thursday morning.
The crash occurred as she and János, who chose to ride along in the
ambulance, were being driven to hospital.
"This is like a nightmare," said Zoltan Csupak, János' cousin. "All we
know is there was the collision, but we don't know any of the details."
Csupak's wife, Elaine, said the family was told János and Rózsa died at
the scene of the accident.
Rózsa was an elementary school teacher and an ambassador for the
Hungarian pavilion of Folklorama, an annual Winnipeg festival
celebrating folklore and art from around the world.
János worked from the Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation.
Csupak said the family accepts the crash was an accident that could have
happened anywhere.
"I don't think there's any blame here," he said. "Something like this is
unforeseen (and) very tragic."
Meanwhile, Canadian officials extended their condolences to the Bodas'
loved ones on Sunday.
"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the Canadian citizens
who passed away in Cuba," Global Affairs Canada said in an e-mail
statement. "Canadian consular officials in Cuba are in contact with
local authorities to gather additional information and are providing
consular assistance to the family."
János and Rózsa are survived by their three children, who are struggling
to come to terms with the death of their parents.
"I never realized how precious life was, but you always have to say 'I
love you,' " said daughter Veronika Mayer.
