Cuba: Driver error to blame for dissident's death
The Associated Press
HAVANA -- Cuban authorities say driver error is to blame for a car crash
last weekend that killed prominent dissident Oswaldo Paya.
An official notice read on the afternoon newscast and simultaneously
sent by email to foreign journalists says Spaniard Angel Carromero was
driving far above the speed limit and braked too quickly when the car
suddenly entered an unpaved construction zone, causing the car to careen
out of control.
The statement says Paya and Harold Cepero, another, lesser-known
dissident who also died, were not wearing seatbelts.
It adds that both were in the backseat, which absorbed the brunt of the
impact when the vehicle skidded into a tree at high velocity.
Carromero and Swedish citizen Jens Aron Modig were treated for minor
injuries.
Friday's notice says authorities are continuing their investigation.
