Women in Cuba, members of "Las Damas Blancas," the Ladies in White,
relatives of jailed dissidents, were beaten and shot at by State
Security, despite engaging in a peaceful march. Las Damas Blancas
protest by attending Mass on Sunday mornings, dressed entirely in white,
and then marching silently through the streets. Their silent walks have
brought worldwide attention to the continuing plight of their relatives,
imprisoned under the Castro regime for "crimes" ranging from penning
protest songs to anti-government graffiti. Some the jailed dissidents
have been sentenced to terms of up to 28 years."
