Two people were killed and 33 others injured when a truck flipped over
on a highway in Fomento, a city in the central Cuban province of Sancti
Spiritus, state media reported.

The accident occurred when the driver lost control Tuesday of a truck
modified to carry passengers, Agencia de Informacion Nacional, or AIN, said.

The truck went off the highway and rolled on its side, killing the
driver and one of his passengers, AIN said.

Three people, including a 3-year-old girl, are listed in serious condition.

The majority of the injured - 26 people - were taken to the provincial
hospital in Santa Clara, a city about 300 kilometers (186 miles) east of
Havana.

Seven children hurt in the accident were transported to the children's
hospital in Placetas, a city near the accident scene.

A total of 5,637 accidents were registered in Cuba during the first six
months of this year, the highest number for a six-month period in the
past 12 years, officials said.

Traffic accidents claimed the lives of 363 people and left 4,388 others
injured in the January-June period, marking the highest death and injury
figures since 2000, the official daily Granma reported earlier this month.

Cuba registered 11,604 traffic accidents in 2011, with 8,240 people
injured, the National Traffic Administration said in a report.

Traffic accidents are the No. 5 cause of death in Cuba, where the
government enacted new traffic laws last year that increased penalties
for violations, such as speeding and driving under the influence of
alcohol. EFE
