Cuba announces work force reduction in health care
The Associated Press

HAVANA -- Cuba says fewer employees are working in the island's vaunted health care system, led by a significant reduction in nonprofessional jobs.

A report from the National Statistics Office says overall employment in the sector fell 14 percent in 2010 to about 282,000. There were 330,000 the previous year.

The biggest change is a 34 percent drop in "technical and auxiliary" workers, down from 134,000 to 88,000.

The report does not give an explanation. But last year, articles in state-run media said it would be necessary to slash inflated payrolls in health care, especially among nonprofessional workers.

Tuesday's report said the number of doctors rose slightly while the ranks of nurses thinned by a similarly slim margin.
